Extensive Droughts in the Conterminous United States during Multiple Centuries

چکیده
Abstract Extensive and severe droughts have substantial effects on water supplies, agriculture, aquatic ecosystems. To better understand these droughts, we used tree-ring-based reconstructions of the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) for period 1475–2017 to examine that covered at least 33% conterminous United States (CONUS). We identified 37 spatially extensive events CONUS examined their spatial temporal patterns. The duration ranged from 3 12 yr average affected 43% CONUS. recent (2000–08) in southwestern CONUS, often referred as turn-of-the-century drought, is likely one longest during past 500 years. A principal components analysis PDSI data 1475 through 2017 resulted three (PCs) explain about 48% variability are helpful Analyses relations between PCs well-known climate indices, such indices El Niño–Southern Oscillation, indicate statistically significant correlations; however, correlations do not appear be large enough (all with an absolute value less than 0.45) useful development prediction models. century drought in the conterminous United States
Droughts can be characterized by their severity, frequency and duration, and areal extent. Depth-area-duration analysis, widely used to characterize precipitation extremes, provides a basis for evaluation of drought severity when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. We used gridded precipitation and temperature data to force a physically-based macroscale hydrol...
متن کاملRoadless space of the conterminous United States.
Roads encroaching into undeveloped areas generally degrade ecological and watershed conditions and simultaneously provide access to natural resources, land parcels for development, and recreation. A metric of roadless space is needed for monitoring the balance between these ecological costs and societal benefits. We introduce a metric, roadless volume (RV), which is derived from the calculated ...
متن کاملEvapotranspiration Intensifies over the Conterminous United States
Using long-term (1948–1996) pan evaporation measurements, a 6% increase in warm-season (May–October) actual evapotranspiration (ET ) is computed over the conterminous United States between 1949 and 1996 via the complementary hypothesis. This predicted increase in ET is in agreement with the measured precipitation increase for the same period if long-term wet-surface ET is assumed to be constant...
متن کاملA step increase in streamflow in the conterminous United States
[1] Annual minimum, median, and maximum daily streamflow for 400 sites in the conterminous United States (U.S.), measured during 1941 – 1999, were examined to identify the temporal and spatial character of changes in streamflow statistics. Results indicate a noticeable increase in annual minimum and median daily streamflow around 1970, and a less significant mixed pattern of increases and decre...
متن کاملDecline of forest interior conditions in the conterminous United States
Forest fragmentation threatens the sustainability of forest interior environments, thereby endangering subordinate ecological attributes and functions. We analyzed the spatial patterns of forest loss and gain for the conterminous United States from 2001 to 2006 to determine whether forest interior environments were maintained at five spatial scales. A 1.1% net loss of total forest area translat...
